Creating Leaders Through Sports

My Students

The middle school students at my school are eager to learn, play, and all around fun students. They strive daily to do their best work and crave to learn more. Students at our school have adopted a credo of REACH: Responsibility, Empowerment, Aspiration, Citizenship, and Honesty. They care about these values and live them in their academics and in their after-school sports.

I teach at a school with 32% free and reduced-price lunch and where over 25 nationalities are represented.

The respect that our students have for each other is a powerful gift that they will carry into their lives well past our K-8 school.

We are located in an urban area where all students arrange for their own transportation to get to school. Some students take several buses each day and are highly dedicated to their education.

My Project

This sports equipment will add to and replace worn out footballs and basketballs. We have a tennis club but do not currently have any nets for our students to practice. This will add so much value to our budding tennis program. Our students work hard in the classroom and they crave to work just as hard in athletics. We feel strongly that taking part in sports creates a sense of belonging, improves social skills, and builds confidence.

Afterschool athletics can boost academic performance, reduce risky behaviors, promote physical health, and provide a safe, structured environment for the children of working parents.

While the classroom is an integral part of a student's education, it should not be the only part of their education. We want all children to have a truly well-rounded education. In order for this to happen, students need after-school sports that have the necessary equipment. When our kids develop a routine that includes exercise, it benefits them the rest of their lives. After-school athletics offer a fun and entertaining environment for all kinds of exercise and encourages healthy habits in the process.
